Advanced Composition

 

 

 

Students will:

 

Comprehension:

 

1.    analyze the structure of an essay by identifying a restricted, unified, precise thesis; identifying an introductory paragraph; identifying body paragraphs; and identifying a conclusion.

 

2.    paraphrase, summarize, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of

texts and genre.

 

3.     use available technology to access information, conduct research, and produce a carefully documented product.

 

Written and Oral:

 

1.    evaluate the purpose, audience, and subject for writing.

 

2.    write an essay which includes an introductory paragraph, supporting body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph, and uses transitions to tie one idea to another.

 

3.    develop an essay using each of the following text structures: process, classification, comparison/contrast, cause/effect, definition, and inductive argument.

 

4.    convey technical information in a written form appropriate to the audience.

 

5.    incorporate material from a wide range of sources (for example, newspapers, magazines, interviews, technical publications, and books) in their writing.

 

Conventions:

 

1.    use correct grammar and usage.

 

2.    use pronoun reference correctly in writing.

2.    use phrases and clauses for purposes of modification and parallel structure in writing.

 

3.    use manuscript forms specified in various style manuals for writing (for example, indenting for extended quotations, precise placement and form of page numbers, appropriate line spacing).

 

4.    refine spelling and grammatical skills and evaluate their own writing.

 

Thinking Skills:

 

1.    recognize an author's point of view, purpose, and historical and cultural context.

 

2.    evaluate information in light of what they know and their specific needs.

 

Research:

 

1.    gather and use information for both primary and secondary research.

 

2.    use technological and printed resources in the library.

 

3.    use organizational features of electronic text such as bulletin boards, database keyword searches, and e-mail addresses to locate information when technology is available.

 

4.    use strategies to gain information from journals, research studies, and technical documents.

 

5.    distinguish among citing correctly, paraphrasing, and plagiarizing.

 

6.    cite sources on note cards and on a "works cited" list using the MLA Handbook

as a guide.
