Advanced Vocabulary

 

 

Students will:

Comprehension:

1.    recognize a list of 30-50 new words each week, including Greek and Latin words and affixes.

 

2.    locate the meaning, pronunciation, spellings, parts of speech, conjugations, entomology, and derivations of unfamiliar words in dictionaries, thesauruses, glossaries, and other sources.

 

3.    determine meanings of words, including those with multiple meanings, by using context clues, such as, synonyms and comparisons, and structural clues such as, roots, suffixes, and prefixes.

 

4.    ascertain a word’s connotation - positive, negative, neutral.

 

Conventions:

1.    refine spelling and grammatical skills and evaluate their own writing and speaking

 

Thinking Skills

1.    understand the need to code switch, i.e., move from a subset of words that is appropriate and acceptable in one cultural setting to another subset that is more appropriate in another setting.

 

2.    learn and practice eight common patterns taken by analogies and practice analogical thinking.

 

Literature:

1.    discuss the evolution of the English language after viewing and responding to videos and researching its history
