Reading
Students will:
Comprehension
1. use a variety of strategies to comprehend
a variety of materials, including
technical writing, newspapers, content area texts, magazines, poetry,
short stories, and novels.
2. select the appropriate reading rate for a
variety of materials.
3. on weekly cloze tests, recall both
subject matter and structure words missing after reading selected passages.
4. summarize the advantages of learning to
skim and scan a variety of materials effectively and explain the steps involved
in the techniques of skimming and scanning.
5. identify and eliminate disruptive reading
conditions as a means to increase comprehension.
6. recognize and use different types of
context clues during timed readings for vocabulary improvement.
7. identify both stated and unstated main
ideas in selected timed readings.
8. recall selected prefixes, suffixes, and
roots when defining words in selected timed readings.
9. differentiate between reading for facts
and critical reading.
10. categorize commonly used organizational
patterns in selected reading materials (i.e. chronological order, cause and
effect, narrative, descriptive, classification, process).
11. list the steps, in order, for the Preview,
Question, Read, Study, Test (PQRST) study reading method.
12. apply the PQRST study reading method to a
variety of content area texts (i.e. social studies, math, science, and
English).

1. evaluate the reliability, accuracy, and

5. define and solve the common reading
faults, including vocalization, subvocalization, narrow recognition span,
pointing, head movement, and regression, and apply the correct methods for
decreasing or eliminating them.

based on elements such as the author’s point of view, the author’s
selection of significant details, and theme development.
Research:
1. evaluate information in light of what
they know and their specific needs.
Literature:
1. read and respond to a variety of novels,
poetry, short stories, and non-fiction.
2. apply knowledge of literary techniques to
understand text.
3. use literature terminology accurately,
including theme, mood, diction, style, and point of view.
4. develop and support a thesis about the
craft and significance of particular works of literature.
