Basic Reading

 

Students will:

 

Comprehension

 

1.    paraphrase, summarize, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of texts and genre.

 

2.    identify main idea, supporting details, and sequence in literary and expository text.

 

3.    infer and predict using information in a variety of text and genres.

 

4.    monitor own comprehension and make modifications when understanding breaks down by rereading a portion, using guided reading aides, and using contextual information.

 

5.    use prior knowledge of subject and text structure to make predictions of content and purpose of text.

 

6.    use text structure, such as cause and effect, to recognize and relate relationships in their own words.

 

7.    use text structure, such as comparisons and contrasts to relate the similarities and differences in comparable concepts.

 

8.    distinguish the different purposes for reading.

 

9.    demonstrate phonetic awareness.

 

10. locate meanings, pronunciations, and derivations of unfamiliar words using dictionaries, glossaries, and class sharing.

 

Written and Oral

 

1.    develop main ideas and support with details a response to a reading.

 

2.    plan, draft, revise, and edit for final copy.

 

3.    organize writing using text structures and graphic organizers.

4.    write using various sentence structures.

 

5.    use a more precise than general vocabulary.

 

6.    read written works with a fluency that matches their current grade level of comprehension.

 

Conventions

 

1.    identify all work with appropriate identification and headers.

 

2.    write and speak in complete sentences.

 

3.    capitalize and spell correctly.

 

4.    edit for correct grammatical convention.

 

5.    identify basic parts of speech.

 

Thinking Skills

 

1.    recognize the difference between fact and opinion.

 

2.    use reading, writing, speaking, listening, and viewing to move from literal to inferential and evaluative thinking.

 

3.    make predictions, draw conclusions, and analyze what they read, hear, and view.

 

4.    be able to apply prior knowledge as a tool to comprehend more difficult text.

 

Literature

 

1.    read and recognize literature as a record of human experience.

 

2.    identify the elements of literature (for example, setting, point of view, characterization, plot, and themes).

 

3.    be able to use correctly, in other contexts, vocabulary taken from readings.

 

4.    identify the different genre existing in written text.

 

5.    identify the elements of plot: exposition, rising action, complication, climax, falling action, and resolution.
