Competitive Speech

Students will:

 

Comprehension

 

1.    read, understand, and apply the historical context and implications of current events to given topics.

 

Written and Oral

 

1.    speak and write for a variety of purposes and audiences including commentary, interpretation, oratory, bill or resolution, interview, and extemporaneous speaking.

 

2.    utilize the correct format of a speech and case.

 

3.    develop confident and consistent delivery techniques including extensive nonverbal communication, vocal expression, diction, word choice, figurative language, sense memory, and recreation of fictional situations.

 

4.    define and integrate content related words correctly in speaking situations.

 

5.    utilize an outline as a pre-writing and delivery tool.

 

6.    actively participate in in-class performances.

 

7.    perform polished speaking events in on-going, competitive, co-curricular tournaments.

 

8.    demonstrate knowledge of parliamentary procedure.

 

Conventions

 

1.    learn, edit, and improve grammatical usage and mechanics within writing and speaking.

 

2.    vary vocabulary for different audiences and purposes.

Thinking Skills

3.    analyze the plot structure, character, rhythm, and meter of literature.
