Contemporary Issues

 Integrated Social Studies/English

 

Students will:

 

Comprehension

 

1.       use a full range of strategies to comprehend technical writing, newspapers, magazines, and fictional materials.

 

Written and Oral

 

1.       use fictional, dramatic, and poetic techniques in writing.

 

2.       convey technical information in a written form appropriate to the audience.

 

3.       support an opinion using various forms of persuasion (factual or emotional) in speaking and writing.

 

4.       incorporate material from a wider range of sources (for example, newspapers, magazines, interview, technical publications, books, and electronic resources) in their writing and speaking.

 

5.       effectively use electronic means of communication, including chat rooms, bulletin boards, and e-mail.

 

6.       participate in a variety of presentation forums including round table discussion, panel presentation, informal debate, and multi-media. 

 

Conventions

 

1.       use pronoun reference correctly in writing and speaking.

 

2.       use phrases and clauses for purposes of modification in writing and speaking.

 

3.       use internal capitalization and punctuation of secondary quotations in writing.

 

4.       refine spelling and grammatical skills and become a self-evaluator of their writing and speaking.

Thinking Skills

 

1.    recognize an author’s point of view, purpose, and historical and cultural content.

 

2.    recognize the inter-relatedness of core curricular area.

 

3.    read, write, listen, speak, and view to solve problems and make predictions.

 

4.    use the skills of analysis, inductive and deductive reasoning, and synthesis as methods of evaluating materials.

Research

 

1.       use organizational features of printed text such as citations, end notes, and bibliographic references to locate relevant information.

 

2.       evaluate information in light of what they know and their specific needs.

 

3.       use organizational features of electronic text such as bulletin boards, database keyword searches, and e-mail addresses to locate information via technology.

 

4.       use strategies to gain information from journals, research studies, and technical documents.

 

5.       use available technology to access information, conduct research, and produce a carefully documented product.

 

Literature

 

1.    read, respond to, and discuss a variety of fiction, non-fiction, and content-area materials, including historical, sociological, and philosophical perspectives.

 

2.    explore universal themes throughout contemporary literature.

 

3.    develop and support a thesis about the significance of particular works of contemporary literature from a variety of ethnic writers.
