Creative Writing

 

 

Students will:

Comprehension:

1.    read and write types of poetry, such as nursery rhymes, concrete poems, found poems, paste pot poems, rhymed poems, lyric poetry, epic poetry, set lines, and free verse.

 

Written and Oral:

 

1.    experiment with stylistic elements such as voice, tone, and style.

 

2.    use fictional, dramatic, and poetic techniques in writing.

 

3.    paraphrase, summarize, synthesize, and evaluate information from a variety of text and genre.

 

4.    practice various prewriting techniques such as freewriting, focused freewriting, and clustering.

 

5.    research and write poems using the following important elements of poetry: denotation and connotation, imagery, figurative language, metaphor, personification, symbol, allegory, paradox, overstatement, understatement, irony, rhythm, rhyme, and tone.

 

6.    write essays demonstrating: a lead, hook, and introductory paragraph, a strong thesis, supporting paragraphs, and concluding paragraphs.

 

7.    demonstrate eight ways of portraying a character: direct descriptions; the character's thoughts, speech, and actions; another character's thoughts, speech, and actions; a character's possessions; and the setting in which a character is found.

 

8.    create a setting appropriate to the story.

 

9.    write stories that maintain a consistent point of view.

 

10. use verbs to move a character through time (reflection, retrospect, and flashback).

Conventions:

 

1.    analyze the importance of the various stages of plot to the success of various short stories.

 

2.    diagram the plots of various stories.

 

3.    demonstrate grammar and usage appropriate for the form being studied.

 

4.    write a dialogue which is correctly punctuated and paragraphed.

 

Literature:

 

1.    know what constitutes literary quality based on elements such as, the author's selection of significant details and theme development and author's reflection of events and ideas of his or her lifetime.
