Comprehension
1. identify main idea, supporting details, and sequence
in a variety of texts.*
2. establish a purpose for reading (for example, reading
to discover, to understand, to interpret, to enjoy, or to solve problems).*
3. critique the content of what is read, heard, said,
written, and seen.
4. vary reading strategies according to the type of
material being read: re-reading, using reference aids, and using contextual

verbs and concrete nouns), imagery, and figurative language as appropriate to
audience and purpose.*
7. organize written and oral presentations using

8. proofread writing to correct errors in
capitalization, spelling, and punctuation, and to produce a finished product
relatively free of grammatical problems such as sentence fragments, agreement
errors, and improper pronoun references.

10. write essays including three parts: an introduction
containing an attention – getter
and a controlling idea; a multi – paragraph body supporting the
controlling idea; and a conclusion summarizing the paper and tying the
concluding idea to the introduction.

Conventions
1. use standard English in writing, including simple
agreement of subject and verb; pronoun/antecedent agreement; consistent verb
tense; and correct modifiers, including appositives.*
