Fifth Grade
Students will:
Comprehension
1. summarize and paraphrase main ideas/details of
fiction and non-fiction text.*
2. draw inferences using contextual clues.*
3. compare and contrast different textual material.*
4. identify sequential order in fiction and non-fiction
text.*
5. understand and apply cause and effect.*
6. confirm meaning using context cues and background
knowledge.
7. use word recognition skills to understand unfamiliar
words (for example, decoding multi-syllable words, affixes, root words).*
8. select appropriate definitions and pronunciations
from the dictionaries and other sources.
Written and Oral
1. generate topics and develop ideas for a variety of
writing and speaking purposes
(for
example, emphasizing narrative and descriptive forms).*
2. organize writing so that there is an introduction,
logical arrangement of ideas, and a conclusion.*
3. use transitions to link ideas.*
4. choose vocabulary that communicates their messages
clearly and precisely.*
5. edit drafts for conventions, standard usage, simple
and complex sentence structure,
and appropriate word choice.*
6. revise drafts for coherence and sequence by adding,
deleting, combining, and
rearranging text.*

Conventions
1. employ standard English usage (noun, verb, subject,

4. use adjectives and adverbs appropriately.*
5. use correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling,
and abbreviations.*
