Sixth Grade
Students will:
Comprehension
1. paraphrase, summarize, and synthesize main ideas and
details in a variety of text and genre.*
2. infer and predict using information in a variety of
text and genre.*
3. compare and contrast to understand ideas, story
elements, and a variety of texts.*
4. understand sequential order in narrative and
expository text.*
5. use text structure, such as cause and effect, to
locate and recall information.*
6. use background knowledge of subject and text
structure to make complex predictions of content and purpose of text.*
7. use word recognition skills to understand unfamiliar
words (for example, letter-sound correspondence, language structures, and
context).*
8. locate meanings, pronunciations, and derivations of
unfamiliar words by using dictionaries, glossaries, and other sources.*
9. evaluate their own research and raise new questions
for further investigation.
Written and Oral
1. generate topics and develop ideas for a variety of
writing and speaking purposes (for example, emphasizing expository and
narrative forms).*
2. organize their writing so that there is an
introduction, logical arrangement of ideas, and a conclusion, including
attention to details and paragraphing.*
3. use a variety of transitions to link ideas.*
4. choose vocabulary that communicates their messages
clearly and precisely; i.e. effectively express thoughts, ideas, descriptions,
etc.*

Conventions
1. employ standard English usage (noun, verb, subject,
predicate) in writing, emphasizing subject-verb agreement.*
2. write a variety of sentences such as simple,
compound, and complex, using correct punctuation.*
3. use regular and irregular nouns and verbs correctly
to clarify meaning.*
4. use adjectives and adverbs, homonyms and homophones
appropriately to enhance voice and word choice.*
5. use correct capitalization, punctuation, spelling,
and abbreviations.*
6. use correct pronoun case and referents.*
7. prepare final product.*
Strategies for Thinking
1. establish, monitor, and adjust
purposes for reading comprehension, main ideas and key words, interpretation,
enjoyment, and problem solving by rereading, using reference aids, and
contextual information.*

Literature
1. read, respond to, and discuss a variety of novels,
poetry, short stories, non-fiction, plays, etc.*

assonance, and rhyme scheme.

represents points of view from familiar and unfamiliar places, people, and
events.*
4. understand and use literary terms (i.e.; figurative
language, foreshadowing, metaphor, simile, symbolism, dialogue, scene, and
flashback).*
5. identify and analyze characters, setting,
problem/conflict, action/plot/events, resolution/solution, mood/tone,
atmosphere, and sequence in literature.*
