Literacy

Pre School

Students will:

 

Comprehension

 

1.    interact with and be exposed to print by:

·      learning in an environment that is filled with examples of meaningful print;

·      experimenting with symbols, letters, sounds, and words;

·      understanding that symbols and print convey meaning.

2.    experience literature and language by:

·      being read to;

·      interacting with a variety of printed materials;

·      participating in conversations with adults and peers.

 

Written and Oral

 

1.    have a variety of language experiences by:

·      engaging in conversations that communicate needs, ideas, and feelings;

·      asking questions and participating in discussions;

·      recalling events and retelling stories;

·      initiating and participating in play;

·      creating imaginative stories;

·      hearing adults use specific vocabulary for different purposes;

·      observing others use writing and drawing for a variety of purposes;

·      interacting with a variety of writing (and drawing) materials.

 

Conventions

 

1.    develop an awareness of conventions and their purposes by:

·      interacting with adults using conventions in their reading, writing, and speaking;

·      learning in an environment enriched with examples of conventions;

·      expressing themselves in a variety of ways through conversations with adults and peers.

 

Strategies for Thinking

 

1.    have opportunities to discuss and solve simple problems from literature and real life by:

·      using imagination in play schemes;

·      participating in open ended conversations and activities;

 

Research

 

1.  use books or other media to gain information by:

·      observing others locate and use resources;

·      solving problems and answering questions when interacting with a variety of literacy materials.

 

Literature

 

1.    have experiences with quality literature by:

·      experiencing stories that reflect situations that are similar and different than their own in relation to feelings, characters, places, cultures, and values;

·      being exposed to a variety of media and types of literature;

·      creating play experiences that reflect the connection between their lives and literature.

 

To support preschoolers in acquiring literacy skills it is important to remember:

 

Young children are capable learners and adults should hold high expectations of them.

They learn through active exploration and discovery.  Children should be immersed in environments that expose them to a variety of written materials used for a variety of purposes.  Appropriate, numerous interactions with adults and peers, such as daily reading, responsive conversations, fostering an interest and enjoyment of reading and writing, can influence literacy learning.
