3517.2 Key Control
Principals and supervisors shall be charged with the responsibility of issuing keys, to familiarize members of their staff with the regulation at once, and to inform new employees of the regulation when keys are issued.

1. All key requests will be reviewed by the principal, and, if valid, pertinent information will be recorded on the district key request form. This form will be transferred to the Maintenance Department for processing, recording and cutting.
2. Elementary school building master keys may be issued to the principal and custodians as well as the building secretary only. A building key may be issued to others if activities so require, but only by the principal signing a district key request form.
3. Secondary school building master keys may be issued to the principal, assistant principal, deans, custodians and secretary only. The Principal shall determine the distribution of keys to all other personnel as needed. This would include any activity that would require entrance to the facility, not school related. The principal must sign a key request with the proper information.
4. Outside door keys are to be given only to personnel who must have access when custodians or administrative personnel are not available to provide access to the building. Outside door keys should registered to area which pertains to his/her activity.
5. Keys shall be furnished by the Director of Maintenance only upon written request from the principal or supervisor.
6. Personnel shall return keys to the principal or supervisor who issued the key upon termination of employment or on transfer from one building to another. Payroll checks will be held until keys are returned. The old key shall then be returned to the Director of Maintenance to be recorded and reissued upon approval.
Classroom and Classroom Cabinetry Keys
1. Keys for classrooms and classroom cabinetry shall be issued to teachers, as required, by the building principals.
2. Principals shall collect or account for classroom keys prior to summer recess.
Following are conditions that govern all key holders:
1. Keys are non-transferable. They shall not be loaned to anyone or borrowed by anyone. This key system is district owned and unauthorized possession of keys will result in disciplinary action.
2. Duplicate keys shall be provided by the Director of Maintenance only. Personnel submitting a key for duplication by others are subject to dismissal.
3. Lost keys. The loss of keys shall be reported at once to the principal. The principal will report loss to the Director of Maintenance and an investigation will be conducted to determine district security. A monetary fine may be imposed by the supervisor to recover district cost of re-keying.
4. Damaged or inoperable locks. Damaged or inoperable locks shall be reported at once to the Maintenance Department. Under no conditions shall unauthorized personnel attempt to remove or repair a lock or lock core.
5. Throughout the district, code access has been made available. The building principal will notify staff as to the entry code each time a change occurs. This access code will not be distributed to students, different site personnel or employee family members. Unauthorized use of this code will result in disciplinary action.
