It is in the best interests of parents, children and the school that drugs, if at all possible, be administered at home. If it becomes necessary to take a drug for medical purposes during the school time, then the following regulations will apply.

1. Prescription medications shall be present in a school only on an individual prescription basis and shall be administered only as prescribed and on a physician’s written authorization. An individual record shall be kept of such prescription medications administered by school personnel. If a physician is unwilling to provide written authorization then the parent will be advised that the school will not administer the drug. The pharmacy label will not be accepted as the physician’s written authorization.

All prescriptions must be in a pharmacy labeled container with the child’s name, name of the medication and dosage.

2. Prescription medications shall be stored in a locked cabinet.

3. Written protocol for conditions requiring non-prescription drugs, e.g. insulin, administered by the school and signed by a physician is required. A copy of each protocol will be available in each building where the medication is administered. A parent permission slip is required for any non-prescription medicine which is to be ingested.

4. If a parent requests a specific non-prescription drug for which there is no protocol, a note will be required from the parent authorizing the school to administer the drug and the drug will be provided to the school in its original container.

5. All medication administered by the school will be recorded.

6. Only personnel delegated by the professional nurse may administer medications to students.

a. Delegatees will be trained in administration of medication by the professional nurse.

b. Documentation of this training will be kept on file and renewed yearly.
