3543.4 Pediculosis (Head Lice)
Purpose of this regulation is to provide a procedure in the event of head lice.
Head lice is defined as louse infestation of the head.
The symptoms are intense itching of the head. Signs of head lice are nits (ova) seen as small 1 to 2 mm. oval, grayish-white objects attached to the hair shaft, or live lice present.
The treatment of head lice is exclusion of the student from school until treated with an over the counter or prescription medication following package directions. The parents should use a lice comb, provided with the medication, to comb as many nits as possible from the students hair. Parents should treat all members of the family, and follow guidelines provided by the school health office for deinfestation of their homes. Retreatment in seven to ten days is advisable.
The student will be evaluated by the school nurse or school health technician upon return to school to determine the effectiveness of the treatment.
