PHILOSOPHY:

Moffat County High School recognizes the importance of promoting good sportsmanship and citizenship. We believe that building strong character and positive leadership in our students is an important aspect of their education. All students who choose to participate in activities shall accept the responsibility that accompanies representing MCHS and the community.

RULE:

Students shall display positive public action during the school year.


CONSEQUENCES AND RECOMMENDATIONS:

A. Minor Violations:

1. Consequence: Minor violations of poor sportsmanship/citizenship will be dealt with through regular school/team policies and procedures. This type of violation may include, but not be limited to, unacceptable conduct at school or during school activities, harassment of individuals on or off school grounds, and other actions which reflect minimally on the student, school, and community.

B. First Serious Violation:

1. Consequence: The student shall lose eligibility for the next two consecutive interscholastic events or two (2) weeks (whichever is greater) of a season (*) in which the student is a participant. The student's parents will be contacted.

2. Recommendation: The student should receive information about the importance of representing himself/herself and MCHS in a positive manner.

C. Second Serious Violation:

1. Consequence: The student shall lose eligibility for the remainder of the season (*) in which the student is a participant and complete community service as designated by the school administration.

2. Recommendation: Before being readmitted to activities following suspension for the second violation, the student shall show evidence in writing that he/she has completed the community service assigned and received counseling from a school counselor.

D. Third Serious Violation:

1. Consequence: The student shall lose eligibility for the remainder of the academic year; in most cases, consequences for students are not carried over from one year to the next.

NOTES:

(*) Season shall be construed to mean that time frame established by the Colorado High School Activities Association for a particular sport or activity participation; however, the student may be held responsible for inappropriate action determined to be close enough to an upcoming season as to bring into question the student’s commitment to the team.

At times, there will be circumstances which do not allow the enforcement of the consequences to reflect the intent of the policy; therefore, coaches and/or administrators shall be responsible for modifying the consequences to promote the intent of the policy.

This policy shall be in conjunction with the substance abuse policy with violations being coordinated between the two.
