6930 Homebound Study Procedure

Moffat County School District RE:1 offers a homebound/hospital program for students of the district who are unable to attend school.

Formal homebound study will not be provided by the school district unless the student is required by circumstances to be out of school over one calendar month. The formal homebound study will be determined by the Building Principal and Director of Student Services/Special Education on an individual basis. Base salary for certified staff used in formal homebound/hospital study will be $15.00 per hour.

Informal assistance for students who will be homebound for less than one calendar month may be offered as follows: Check out appropriate texts and materials to the student and use the best process for sending home information, assignments, instructions, etc., and receiving assignments, tests, etc.

Procedures for Homebound Study:

All students must have a staffing and be approved by the director of special education and the principal of their building.

1. An application must be completed including the physician's statement indicating diagnosis, anticipated length of illness, and limitations on instruction, if any.

2. Upon completion of the application, a planning conference will be held at the student's school. This conference will include the special education director, principal, teacher, counselor, parent, student (when possible), and homebound/hospital teacher.

3. At the planning conference, a course syllabus will be provided and instructional objectives will be outlined. The homebound/hospital teacher and the classroom teacher will establish a teaching schedule.

4. Documentation of meetings with student and teacher will be recorded by the homebound/hospital teacher as backup information. This will not necessarily be submitted.

The objective of the homebound/hospital program is to prepare students to return to the regular school environment or to receive as much education as can be provided for the period of the sustained impairment or illness. Homebound instruction will only be provided if the parent or other adult is in the house at the time the homebound teacher is there.

It is important that the student and a responsible adult are at the location to which the teacher will come at the time and day arranged. Teachers are on a schedule and the student must be ready for instruction at the appointed times. If it is impossible to keep the appointment with the teacher, the homebound/hospital teacher must be notified.

It is not possible to cover all subjects that are offered by the schools. The homebound/hospital teacher will be able to instruct the student in the basic subjects.
