Moffat County School District Board of Education promotes healthy schools by supporting student wellness, good nutrition, and regular physical activity as part of the total learning environment. Schools contribute to the basic health status of students by facilitating learning through the support and promotion of good nutrition and physical activity. Improved health optimizes student performance potential. Children who are physically active and who eat well-balanced meals are more likely to learn more readily in the classroom.
The Board of Education is committed to promoting physical activity and providing a healthy school nutrition environment, therefore reducing childhood obesity, and preventing diet-related chronic diseases.
To further the principles stated above, the Board adopts the following four goals:
Curriculum
Moffat County School District will support and promote a comprehensive learning environment for developing and practicing lifelong wellness behaviors.
The learning environment will positively influence a student's understanding, beliefs and habits as they relate to good nutrition and regular physical activity. Furthermore, this environment will provide students with appropriate resources and tools to make informed and educated decisions about lifelong healthy eating habits and beneficial physical activity.
The K-12 Health Curriculum shall include information on nutrition, healthy lifestyles, positive relationships/conflict resolution, drugs/alcohol, diseases, and social responsibilities.
The District Nurse and support staff shall perform screenings of all students, PS-9, for hearing, vision, dental, height, and weight. The District Nurse also networks and coordinates health care for students and families with multiple medical, social, and health agencies in the community.
Nutrition
Moffat County School District will support and promote proper dietary habits contributing to students' health status and academic performance.
Foods and beverages available on school grounds and at school-sponsored activities shall meet or exceed state and local health department guidelines. The school lunch program operates under the National School Lunch Program, which is a federally funded program that assists in providing nutritious lunches to children at reasonable prices.
A breakfast program is offered at each building in an effort to meet the students' nutritional needs.
At the classroom levels-birthday parties, holiday celebrations, special celebrations--teachers and parents are encouraged to provide vegetables/fruits, cheese/crackers, juices, and desserts, and otherwise offer a variety of snacks that represent all food groups. At the elementary schools, midmorning and mid-afternoon snacks will follow similar guidelines.
At the high school, soda-dispensing machines are turned off prior to and during the lunch hours, and the school store does not sell candy or soda during this same time period.
Physical Activity
Moffat County School District will provide students a variety of opportunities to engage in physical activity.
A quality physical education program is an essential component for all students to learn about and participate in physical activity. Physical activity should include regular instructional physical education, in accordance with the district's content standards, as well as co-curricular activities and recess.
The K-12 Physical Education Curriculum shall include information/activities related to skill development, fitness, lifelong activities, self-confidence, good sportsmanship, and following directions.
Staff
Moffat County School District will facilitate a Wellness Program for staff members that includes information and activities related to healthy lifestyles.
