MESSAGE FROM THE SUPERINTENDENT
Moffat County School District is excited for the opportunity to improve the learning environment for students. We are thankful for the tremendous community support of our $29.5 million dollar bond election. The funds generated through these bonds will enable us to make significant facility upgrades and repairs throughout the district. Building designs are being refined, and we will begin construction as soon as students are out for the summer. We will be concentrating on these five capital construction goals:
- repair our school facilities to extend the life of the buildings and reduce energy and maintenance costs by upgrading heating ventilation and lighting, and replacing roofs where needed
- increase safety by constructing secure entrances at each building, along with bringing fire protection systems up to code,
- upgrade our technology infrastructure and replace outdated classroom computers
- construct new classrooms and other interior spaces at Craig Middle School to improve the educational facility, while preserving existing auditorium, gym, and shop areas
- renovate and retrofit the existing Craig Intermediate School campus and the three existing elementary schools to include preschool through 5th grade
Enclosed in this report, you will find information about the state of our school district including, student achievement data, figures regarding our finances, and evidence of progress toward district goals.
Moffat County School District remains fiscally sound. Our student enrollment, which had been dropping through the last decade, appears to have stabilized and is increasing. Since state funding is allocated per pupil, more students translates into more revenue. Last year we successfully lobbied the state legislature to change the school finance law to increase our per-pupil funding. This, along with the prioritization of expenditures and accompanying budget-cuts, has ensured Moffat County School District’s financial health.
Our annual accreditation review by the Colorado Department of Education indicates that our school district is making good progress toward accomplishing our goals. We received commendations in numerous areas. An accreditation summary is enclosed in this report. An examination of our student achievement data indicates a trend of steady growth in most academic areas. Writing achievement continues to be an area identified for improvement.
A major focus of Moffat County Schools has been to develop professional learning communities where teachers work in collaborative teams to develop instructional strategies, in order to ensure that all students learn at high levels. We are currently implementing systematic interventions to support learning and prevent failure. Grade level and department teams analyze student achievement results, to guide instruction and develop interventions tailored to respond to individual student needs. Each school has developed research-based strategies and systematic intervention to ensure learning occurs.
Moffat County School District is committed to upgrading our facilities and improving student achievement. We are grateful for your support as we strive to improve the quality of education for our students.
Sincerely,
Pete Bergmann
Superintendent
