VANGUARD FOR TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

LEVEL:   6th Grade                 CONTENT AREAS:  Math

CURRICULUM OUTCOMES/STATE STANDARDS:
1. Number Theory  #6,7, & 8
2. Operations #10 & 18
3. Algebra  #1
4. Statistics & Probability #1, 2, & 3.

CURRICULUM OBJECTIVES:
1.To gather and interpret data in order to construct different graphs such as circle, pie and bar graphs
2.To compare and contrast land size and population density
3.To calculate the mean population for New York City and five boroughs.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION:  Students will use given web sites to research New York City and five boroughs for land size and population.  They will construct a graph and interpret the results.

MATERIALS:
Web sites
Appleworks-graphing instructions
PROCEDURES:
Objective #1:  Students will access specific web sites and gather pertinent information in order to construct accurate pie, circle, and bar graphs using AppleWorks Graphing Information.  Access web site: http://publicpurpose.com/dm-nyc.htm

Objective #2:   Students will take information from their different graphs and produce a chart listing the land area and population density from the earliest listing to the latest.

Objective #3:  Using calculators, students will add together the populations of New York City and the five boroughs and then divide to come up with the mean population  for the entire area.

ASSESSMENT:
Student generated graphs comparing and contrasting land size and population density will be presented to the class, discussed and evaluated by both teacher and classmates.
EDUCATORS' NOTES:
Allow at least two class periods to complete this task.
