Task 3 - Applications of the Quadratic Formula

You may leave your answers as radicals or written as decimals rounded to the nearest tenth.

1 ) A room is 6 feet longer than it is wide. Its area is 691 square feet. Find the dimensions of the room.

2 ) The height of an object, h in meters, projected upward at an initial speed, r in meters per second, at a given time, t in seconds, is found using the following formula: h = rt - 4.9t2. Find how long it takes a ball thrown upward with an initial speed of 14 m/s to reach a height of 7 m.

3 ) If three capacitors of capacitance x, y, z are connected in series, the total capacitance of the circuit, C, is given by
                                                          1 + 1 + 1 =   1
                                                            x     y    z     C

(Capacitance is a positive number measured in microfarads.) In a certain circuit, y is 5 times as great as x, and z, is 5 microfarads less than y. If the total capacitance is 2 microfarads, find x, y, and z.

4 ) Boyle’s Law, applied to the amount of gas used in a given experiment at a constant temperature, states that pV = 240 where p is pressure measured in kilopascals and V is volume measured in cubic centimeters. If a decrease in pressure of 1 kPa produces an increase in volume of 20 cubic centimeters, what was the original pressure on the gas?

5 ) Pamela and Anita can complete a job in 6 hours if they work together. Working alone, Pam takes 4 hours longer to complete the job than Anita does when she works alone. How long would it take each woman to finish the the job working alone?
