PAWS is a set of school-wide rules to create a common language about behavior at Sunset. It replaces the Sundog program. There are many parts to the initiative. We will start with three:

* School-wide rules

* Expectations

* Acknowledgements

Reinforcement/Reward System
Every school day staff members will give out tickets to random students who are following the rules/expectations. Students will put their name on the ticket and add it to our treasure chest. Each week ten tickets will be pulled. Those students will receive a "mystery motivator" the next week and a congratulations call to their parents. A mystery motivator will be something like basketball with the principal. At the end of each trimester, if we reach our goal there will be an ALL school reward such as our 1st trimester reward - frog activities throughout the day.

Whole school reward
If the students receive 15,000 tickets by May 29th - Pool Party!

New this Year.............
Kelso's choices - our conflict management system

Kelso is a frog that helps solve conflicts in his pond. The curriculum teaches children about choices to make when dealing with a conflict. Conflict can be anything from not getting their way, to tough friendship questions. The Kelso's Choices program is centered around a frog character named Kelso and the program contains stories that are read to the children about problems Kelso helps his friends and others around his lily pad handle. It teaches children the difference between a big problem (one that cannot be solved by the student, such as someone being hurt) and a small problem (one that can be solved by the student, such as someone cutting in front of them in line.) The program also introduces 9 specific choices that the children can make when faced with a small problem.
This program reduces the amount of tattling in the classroom - when kids come to us ready to tattle on someone, we ask them "Is this a big problem or a small problem?" If they say it's a small problem, we talk about some choices they can make to solve the problem on their own.
