Being Someone People Can Count On
Ser Alguien en Quien Se Puede Confiar
Last week, I wrote about the satisfaction that comes from good work — from being useful, contributing, and ending the day knowing that your effort went toward something worthwhile.
There is another quality closely connected to that: being someone people can count on.
I think we sometimes underestimate how valuable reliability is.
Talent is wonderful. Intelligence is wonderful. Creativity, confidence, ambition — all wonderful things. But in almost every part of life, there is enormous value in being the person who shows up.
The person who arrives when they said they would. Who does what they said they would do. Who notices when something needs doing and helps. Who can be trusted with a responsibility. Who doesn't disappear when something becomes inconvenient or difficult.
These are not particularly glamorous qualities. Nobody is likely to make a movie about someone remembering to arrive on time and doing their share of the work.
But communities are built on people like that.
Teams depend on them. Workplaces depend on them. Families depend on them. Friendships depend on them. Schools certainly depend on them.
And reliability is something young people learn through practice.
Every time a student gets themselves to class on time, completes something they committed to, follows through for a teammate, or takes responsibility for a mistake, they are building something much more important than a single grade or consequence. They are becoming the sort of person other people learn they can trust.
That matters.
None of us gets this right all the time. We oversleep and we forget things. We make promises we discover we cannot keep. We let people down. Part of becoming reliable is learning what to do next: own it, make it right where you can, and do better the next time.
Perhaps that is one of the most important things we can give young people before they leave us — the understanding that their presence matters.
When you are part of something, people notice when you aren't there. When you make a commitment, someone is counting on you. When you do your part well, you make it possible for someone else to do theirs.
There is real pride in becoming a person whose family, friends, coworkers, teammates, and community know: If they say they'll be there, they'll be there. If they say they'll do it, they'll do it.
That's a reputation worth building.
Go Bulldogs!

¡Vamos Bulldogs!
